less about the landmarks and more about the community

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

I come from a family where curiosity is encouraged. Childhood memories include trips to historic landmarks and museums. I also have memories of trying new food and listening to new music. This upbringing influenced my attitude about interacting with others. Curiosity comes with the openness to understand and never judge. As I got older, traveling became less about the landmarks and more about the community. Wondering streets and finding cafes became more interesting than museums because I would meet people from the community. All of these experiences have entered my classroom. I encourage all of my students to share in my curiosity. I demonstrate my curiosity towards them by listening when they speak. It’s not about the color of our skin or the accent in our speech. It’s about the story we have to share.
